12 THE MONTANA ARCHITECT | 2013 | www.aia-mt.org T he past year has seen a lot of changes within the School of Architecture, setting the stage for anoth- er exciting year in Cheever Hall. Perhaps the most visible of these changes, is the construction work that took place on Cheever Hall this past summer as part of a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant for the seismic upgrade of buildings on the MSU campus. While the main focus of the construction was on the addition of new CMU shear walls and exposed steel brace frames, the University invested additional funding to provide new storefront windows on the east end of the building, in student common areas, and in classrooms. The daylight streaming into the design studios has transformed these spac- es—allowing wonderful views of the campus for our students and providing the public with a view into our studio and review spaces. Our main entry area now features the original concrete floor as an exposed polished surface that complements the newly refurbished Cheever Gallery walls, made possible by the generous support of AIA Montana. In addition, new bamboo benches, wall pinup boards and a generous use of color at our main office provide our internal ‘front door’ with a modern sense of design. Langlas & Associates, Beaudette Consulting Engineers and Mosaic Architecture worked throughout the summer to get us back into our building in time to welcome our returning students!
