13 While our building was under construction, our studios relocated to the School of Art building and Romney Gym—a temporary return to our former spaces in the gym! In addition, we had students studying throughout the world as part of our Summer Semester course offer- ings. Associate Professor Zuzanna Karczewska and Professor Fatih Rifki taught a group of our students in the Rome Studio. Students utilized the Rome Center studio space to undertake projects located in the heart of ancient Rome. The Rome Studio continues to immerse students in the daily rituals of living in a foreign city. Their time in Rome was preceded by travel in Poland and Germany and their stay in Rome was followed by a week of study in Turkey. This past spring, Professors John Brittingham and Henry Sorenson led students on a similar study encompassing travel throughout India, Australia and Southeast Asia. On a different continent, Associate Professor Christopher Livingston combined two of our successful study abroad programs—the Morocco Sustainable Communities program and the MSU-Oxford Brookes University design-build program. Students from Oxford Brookes University joined MSU architecture students in Morocco for six weeks to undertake the design and construction of a waste incinerator as a means to address the growing amounts of trash in rural villages. Along with the design-build experience, MSU students embarked on the task of mapping the village, Zawaya Ahan- sal, in order to obtain World Heritage Site designation for this unique and culturally rich settlement. Completing our students reach across the globe, Assistant Teaching Professor Tad Bradley took a group of graduate and undergraduate students back to the Northlands Glass Workshop in Lybster, Scotland. Closer to home, the School continues to pursue teaching and research activities that contribute to not only the educational experience of our students but also the research endeavors of our faculty. In Octo- ber, Professor Ralph Johnson and Teaching Professor Barry Newton spearheaded a multi-disciplinary effort resulting in a College of Arts and Architecture Symposium titled “A Critical Rediscovery of the Northern Rockies.” This event featured public presentations by archi- tects, anthropologists, artists, geographers, historians, film makers and musicians, all exploring the ways in which our unique landscape shapes our research and creative work. The School also welcomed four visiting faculty this year.
