16 THE MONTANA ARCHITECT | 2014 | www.aia-mt.org Green Building Council’s LEED® Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in June 2009. He has completed nine certified historic tax credits projects and six LEED Platinum projects resulting in numerous green building and preservation awards. Randy is the recip- ient of the first Montana Better Bricks award for “architecture in 2009” and the Roche Jaune Award for Civic Leadership Excellence in 2012. In 2014, he and his wife, Janna, were awarded Small Business Persons of the Year for Montana by the Small Business Administration. Randy has been a regional leader in sustainable design and often travels around the state and country to speak on topics of sustainabil- ity, including giving a TEDx talk. Because of his passion for sustain- ability Randy signed on to the American Institute of Architects 2030 Commitment for Sustainability. As a result, in 2011, Randy was asked to speak at the national AIA convention in New Orleans about his successes and challenges with sustainable issues from the perspective of a small architecture firm. While at the convention, Randy attended the session entitled “Demystifying Fellowship,” which was extremely informative. Though the process of becoming a fellow would not be easy, it was doable. Where Does He Go Randy Hafer is the newest FAIA in the state of Montana. As a result, he has been selected by the Northwest and Pacific Region as a Deputy Representative to the AIA College of Fellows. The Northwest and Pacific Region includes Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Ore- gon, and Washington. As a Deputy Regional Representative, most of his activities will focus upon: Mentoring, Fellows Advancement, and Community Leadership. Therefore, Randy would like to encourage others to consider submitting an application for fellowship and he would be willing to provide information to anyone interested in the Fellows program. w Tracy Lofts: Billings, MT - Built in 1919 as a distribution center for manufactured goods, it was later modified to serve as a cold storage produce warehouse. The 18,000SF warehouse space was converted into 19 loft apartments ranging in size from studios to two-bedroom units. Located in a designated historic district, the building includes numerous high performance strategies that were incorporated into the renovated structure. Windows were either refurbished or built new to replicate the originals, significantly improving thermal performance and infiltration. The building envelope was insulated and significantly ‘tightened’, reducing air changes per hour (ACH) from “unmeasurable” to about 3 ACH. A 4kW PV rooftop system was designed to provide electricity to power the building’s common area needs. Additional features included 128SF of solar hot water panels, salvaged building materials, Energy Star® appliances and lighting. A 5,000 gallon rainwater collection system is located in the basement to provide water for toilets and laundry. Tracy has submitted for LEED® Final Review with enough points to achieve Platinum certification.  MONTANA ARCHITECT — continued from page 15 WYSS Wilderness Medicine Campus National Outdoor Leadership School: Lander, WY - The state-of-the-art, high performance Wyss Wilderness Medicine Campus is a campus com- prised of an 11,000SF educational facility with classrooms, meeting spaces, offices, student commons, kitchen and dining facilities, a caretaker residence and five cabins to house 32 students.
