The building incorporated the use of a 9.9kW photovoltaic array, 64SF of solar hot water collection, composting toilets and a permeable paving parking lot utilizing crushed glass. The building is 79% more energy efficient and uses 60% less water than a standard energy code model. The U.S Green Building Council awarded the project LEED®-NC Platinum Certification in 2007 One South Broadway: Billings, MT - Originally named the Armour Cold Storage Building, One South Broadway was built in 1918 as a cold storage warehouse and distribution center. Randy guided the 15,000SF conversion into the first loft apartments in Billings and the surrounding region. The design focused on maintaining the historic integrity of the original building in order to meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Properties. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. KLOS Building: Billings, MT - The Klos Building, a 3,000SF former saloon building is among the oldest commercial structures in Billings, originally constructed ca. 1893. The building became the new home of High Plains Architects and presented a perfect opportunity to design a space that would reflect the company’s values and explore a wide range of sustainable design strategies. Through an integrated design approach, an extensive remodel restored the structure while remaining true to its past. The design incorporates daylighting and natural ventilation, a 2 kW photovoltaic array, three 1200 gallon rainwater collection tanks, extensive material salvaging/reuse, and low-emission products. The daylighting and stack ventilation have proven to be especially effective. The U.S Green Building Council awarded the project LEED®-NC Platinum Certification in 2009. The Klos Building provides an excellent way for High Plains Architects to practice what they preach.
