7 a majority of these being Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) credits. Licensed architects in Montana will be required to have 12 HWS continuing education credits effective for 2016 license renewal. Architecture defines the basic use of space and affects every part of our lives by not only providing shelter; it sends a message to people and expresses our culture. For many years, the narrow definition of a public building at the state level has been concern of Montana AIA. The Montana Annotated Codes (MAC) definition of a public building is “one that is owned by the state or government.” Past efforts have included legislation making the correction which were introduced but were stalled in the initial stage. The Inter- national Building Code (IBC) definition of a public building is defined as a building used by the public. This year, Montana AIA met with the Business Standards Department and their law- yer in Helena to open a dialog. This effort resulted in proposed changes in the wording of the Montana Annotated Code (MAC) clarifying public use of a building.
