15 the vocabulary of agricultural sheds of the region. The building, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, won the 2007 AIA Montana Merit Award and the 2009 AIA Pacific Northwest Citation Award, was featured in the New York Times in 2005 and appeared in Metal Architecture in 2009. The contextual design for the Galusha Higgins Galusha Building on the main street of Helena follows the density and architectural character of Mon- tana’s state capital. Far from a stereotypical Montana log house, the Klein Residence is a light modern structure that maximizes the 360-degree mountaintop views and links the natural environ- ment to the interior by a water feature running through the main living area. The Autumn Ridge Residence , a cedar house nestled at the base of the Bridger Mountains, takes advantage of the panorama of the Gallatin Valley and the Bridgers. In another typology altogether, the popular WeeBee’s Café (now the Red Chair Café and Bar) – published in Metal Architecture – introduced Montana to the principle of four façades of equal quality and a fifth façade, a curved roof reflec- tive of the mountains in the distance, that visually increases the building scale to be in con- text with adjacent structures of Bozeman’s Ridge Development, including the Medical Build- ing , also designed by Thomas. Thomas provoked greater awareness of architecture styles in his community through projects that respect the surrounding architecture and historical roots yet display his unique modernist vision. The Bridger Apartments and the Baxter Apartments , striking solutions to low-income housing, prove that elegant design needn’t be sacri- ficed for low price. Inspired by the architecture tradition of Sir Edwin Lutyens while following the existing city grid, the seven-building Bridger Apartments complex won the 2005 Bozeman Community Beautification Award and appears in Building from the Best of the Northern Rockies (The Sonoran Institute, 2005). The V illage Downtown , a 32-acre housing development anchoring the east side of Bozeman, proves that a development can be distinc- tive, with an historic flair, and can enrich the community visually and architecturally. Widely published throughout the region, the design combines loft structures and townhouses with the introduction of “new urbanism” to create a landmark development that builds on the architecture precedent of historic Main Street, establishing an entirely GALUSHA HIGGINS GALUSHA KLEIN RESIDENCE AUTUMN RIDGE RESIDENSE WEEBEE’S CAFE MEDICAL BUILDING BRIDGER APARTMENTS THE VILLAGE DOWNTOWN LOFTS
