26 THE MONTANA ARCHITECT | 2015 | www.aia-mt.org Citation Award The Lark: Basecamp for Adventure S ince 1883 Bozeman, Montana has been a "trail town," a stopping point for gold miners, cattle ranchers, mountain climbers, academics, and a diverse group of people committed to preserving the beautiful landscape and local community. Many people have settled and called this place home, and many more have traveled through to admire the views and soak in the culture. On the edge of Bozeman’s historical downtown, a traditional “motor lodge” style motel was one of the stopping points for travelers until it slowly aged with time and was abandoned. Erik Nelson and Brian Caldwell, local designers and owners of Thinktank Design Group INC., in collaboration with Richard Fernau, saw great potential in the old building. With a commitment to the city, the landscape, and the unique community vibe, the ideas for The Lark Hotel were born. Opened in April 2015, The Lark, nestled in downtown Bozeman, gives a nod to history with the preservation of the classic "motor lodge" layout, but brings innovation and contemporary style to the design with exposed wood, leather features, metal framework, a sleek outdoor fireplace, and artwork in every room from local artists and graphic designers. The upcycled design brought some challenges, but what appeared to be shortfalls turned into strategic design opportunities, created for the delight of the guests. The bright and cozy lobby serves as a base camp for adventurists with trail maps, local literature, and inspiration to head out and explore. The basecamp idea stemmed from the desire to have The Lark compliment, rather than compete with, what downtown has to offer. The staff add to the ambiance by serving as guides to the adventure and culture of downtown, encouraging guests to explore to the tastes, sights and sounds around them. Instead of trying to keep guests sequestered on the property, they are encouraged to experience the best of what Bozeman has to offer. When it comes down to it, The Lark demonstrates a recognition of local history, current culture, and progressive design. At its simplest, what makes The Lark a unique hotel experience is local talent, clarity of design intent, and relentless attention to detail. Lead Architect: Erik R Nelson & Brian T.
