Interior Products are deliverables only in the sense that they open the door to further action by local ar- chitects. But the work of the students can be calculated as a tangible contribution—good will dollars—that contributes to the overall value of the community—and the students learn the hard lessons of accommodation, collaboration and compromise. The Community Design Center has over forty years of active engagement in small communities and urban areas across the state. Anchored solidly in our land-grant mission, the CDC offers students the opportunity to have a unique relationship with a neighborhood group, community or non-profit agency whose interests are distinctly social. It is easy to understand the direct nature of the aesthetic presence of architecture, but it is much harder to appreciate the indirect social and communal consequence of the projects that we design unless one experiences this first hand. The CDC is fundamental to our curriculum, yet it has never enjoyed sustained support from the University; it must exist on the minimal financial resources that it receives form its clients; we are concerned for its future. ‘Service Learning’ as a specific pedagogical strategy that requires a student to journal and evaluate their experience working with a public client. The formal focus of the stu- dio shares the spotlight with social agency— engagement, action, documentation and evaluation. While this type of education is natural to Architecture, it has become an important part of the contemporary academy and represents a significant turn to the ‘engaged studio’ that Dean Malecha discusses in his book. The good news is that the School of Archi- tecture at MSU has always been interested in engagement and we will continue to de- velop new ways to work with the profession, initiate community based projects, structure the CDC, and craft an individual and exem- plary form of ‘service learning’. Changes in funding have brought addi- tional costs to students, which is why the School of Architecture, its faculty, staff and students are so very grateful for the support that the Montana AIA has provided: Austin Anderson a 4th year student from Williston, ND and Haley Teske a 4th year student of Columbus, MT are each a recipient of a 2016-2017 Montana AIA Chapter Scholar- ship. Awards are in the amount of $3000. The MSU School of Architecture Scholar- ship Committee selected these students on the basis of several criteria; AIAS participa- tion, overall GPA, design excellence and a recommendation based on an interview by the Montana AIA Scholarship Committee. These awards are made possible by an en- dowment established by the Montana AIA Chapter. Denny Stephenson, Ali Martin and Vincent Gavin represented the MT AIA Scholarship Committee. The support of Montana AIA is instrumental to the future of the School. As I continue to look at our School, I see the potential for unique programs that will offer cross disciplinary study with Art, Planning and Interior Design. These programs will support the growth of Mon- tana, and should be structured to support and engage Montana AIA. As I said last year, “It is an exciting time to be in Mon- tana and an exciting time to be at MSU; I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the next year.” b
