19 Long-term durability and sustainability were top design considerations. While minimal in appearance, great care went into water management and air sealing details. SIP panels were used in a modular size, short- ening the construction schedule, strengthening the thermal envelope, and eliminating thermal bridging. Areas of stick framing received closed cell spray foam insulation to prevent air leakage and provide maxi- mum R-value. Rigid foundation insulation was tightly fit and sealed to prevent gaps, maintaining the thermal envelope below grade. Use of repurposed materials including barnwood and recycled steel gives a second life to these materials and contributes to the weathered appearance of an agricultural building. Cavallo Ranch achieves harmony with the land and its denizens through the thoughtful response to site, program, materials, and environment. Quiet and calm, yet powerfully modern, the design emerges from the intersection of context and program. Respectful of the established community and its history, the home is a welcome addition to the rapidly developing outskirts of Bozeman.
