23 mat, plywood, and a hardwood top layer, is a key element to ensuring guests could relax in a quiet setting with minimum noise levels. The hotel circulation path focuses on a democratic view to the Bridger Mountains that all guest equally shares. Beginning with an essentialism design intent, all items deemed necessary for the project were elevated to a level of high design. This was executed through local artisan built-in furniture and fixtures. A connection to place was emphasized with the curation of the art in the guest rooms. Exposed CLT ceilings and glulam beams add warmth to the private guest rooms, while the unique, infographic wall installations tell the guest a story about the experiences that are waiting just outside their door. The social responsibility requirement was answered by the teams’ lead- ership in making the Lark Hotel Addition one of the first building in Montana to employ sustainable Mass Timber/Cross Lamented Timber construction. By using Mass Timber, which is precision manufactured in a factory to the exact building design, on site construction waste was greatly reduced. Wood also requires less embodied energy over its entire cradle to grave lifecycle than steel or concrete and is a renewable resource. To ensure a warm and comfortable interior even on the coldest winter days, an ener- gy efficient building envelope was created with the use of tight-fitting Mass Timber components, wood’s natural insulating properties, and triple pane windows. The use of CLT provide an aesthetic opportunity to express the use of wood in a new way and pro- vides a visual story to share about taking hotel sustainability to the next level. In addition, its' quick erection minimized disruption to the existing hotel’s guests and busy downtown Main Street area. b
