20 THE MONTANA ARCHITECT | 2019-2020 | www.aia-mt.org Rose Park Pool Operations Building Cushing Terrell Citation Award Rose Park Pool Operations Building The Rose Park Pool Operations Building is designed for The City of Billings pool and waterslide facility at Rose Park. The Parks and Rec Department came to us with the goal of ensuring long term use by providing the best user experience. Placemaking concepts of community inclusion, focus on place, collaborative group effort, vi- sioning, acting on observations, and form supporting function were applied to achieve this goal. The client and design team’s values regarding the pool, park, neighborhood, and resource resiliency are expressed through design decisions and details. The building comprises of two structures carefully placed around the existing pool, water slides, and trees. A curved roof canopy saddles over the structures providing an entry experience, shade, and inclement weather protection. The entry oculus, with its sup- porting tree and vegetation, exemplifies the City’s value of land- scape in the Yellowstone River valley. The west “warm” building is fully enclosed and hosts the community training room, restrooms, concessions, first aid, and office. The east “cold” building comprises of changing and storage rooms constructed of block walls with open air metal screens above to allow for natural ventilation. A construction palate was developed consisting of concrete mason- ry block, steel pipe and channel, glue laminated wood beams, and metal flashing. Blues and greens were selected for building accent signage to pair with the pool, landscape, and blend with the cool grays of the steel and block. In November of 2019 the project was also awarded the 2019 Excel- lence in Structural Engineering Award for projects under $20m given by the National Council of Structural Engineers Associa- tions (NCSEA).
