24 THE MONTANA ARCHITECT | 2019-2020 | www.aia-mt.org McDonald Building A&E Citation Award McDonald Building The McDonald Building is a mixed-use development located in the heart of downtown Billings, Montana. Originally constructed in 1907, the building served as the state’s first YMCA. One of the design team’s primary goals was to enable the historic building to continue its deep-rooted story in the community of Billings. Prior to the renovation, the building sat vacant on a key intersection in the Central Business District. The project restored more than just the style and function of the building, but also the energy and spirit of the neighborhood. As a recipient of TIF funding, the McDonald Building aligned with the Downtown Billings Framework Plan, a master plan encouraging the restoration of existing infrastructure. The project played a sig- nificant role in the urban renewal of the District by planting a thriv- ing, local business in a central location. The project also initiated a new Design District for Billings by inspiring other design-related businesses to join the revived block. While the renovation transformed the underserved building into a contemporary, urban development, significant efforts were made to restore historical elements, including the building’s original façade. A significant amount of original brick was salvaged through repair to uncover a dramatic exterior transformation. The interior was remodeled to provide a sophisticated, modern approach to both the business spaces below and residential loft apartments upstairs, yet original brick and concrete remain exposed to weave a historical context throughout the modern design. From fixtures to furniture, all details were carefully selected to not only reflect a modern aesthetic, but implement a distinct work culture for the office environment. Each workspace element was designed to encourage collaboration and creativity, including movable furniture,
