Montana State University’s 2019 Strategic Plan and the School of Architecture In January of 2019, Montana State University initiated a new strategic plan titled Choosing Promise. The document states that the mission of the university is “the creation of knowledge in service to communities” and further states that the vision for the University is the “transforma- tion of lives and communities in the people’s interest.” The following are three examples selected from the many undertaken by our faculty and students from this past year that clearly illustrate the School of Architecture’s commitment to the University’s mission and vision: In the fall Graduate Studio Professor Steve Juroszek’s students, in collaboration with the Bozeman School District, analyzed the attributes of single-story and two-story elementary schools and made recommendations regarding the sustainable principles that the school district might incorporate in future school designs. Jakub Galczyns- ki’s project below is an example from the studio. #2 Additionally, fourth-year students enrolled in the Community Design Studio collaborated with the City of Bozeman to develop a promotional campaign in support of the City’s efforts to encourage accessory dwelling units as an affordable housing unit typology. They created a buyer’s guide not only explaining the process but also illustrating seven different designs, and a video titled: Is An ADU For You?, which can be found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=iSY_jyGIrBo&feature =youtu.be #3 #4 #5 Third-year students in Professor Maire O’Neil Conrad and Teaching Professor Jack Smith’s studios, traveled to Paradise, California, to visit the site of the Paradise fire where approximately 14,000 residences were destroyed. There they worked with the City Commission to re-imag- ine a fire-safe environment of relatively dense housing and greater community open space surrounding, what the City Commission hopes will be, a future commercial core. Ethan Brown’s proposal is shown below: #6 Growth in the School of Architecture There are 347 students enrolled in the School of Architecture this fall, the largest number since 2013, with 285 students in the under- graduate program and 62 in the graduate program. The College of Arts and Architecture has funded the Community Design Center Director’s position, and Brian Brush, a former MSU Environmental Design program graduate with advanced degrees from Columbia and McGill, assumed the role of Director this fall. He and his students are working on schematic design concepts for a Broadwater County emergency services facility and a master plan for teacher housing in Gardener, Montana. b For further information from each of the faculty whose student work was illustrated above, please contact: Professor Ralph Johnson, School of Architecture Director, ralphj@ montana.edu Associate Professor BradfordWatson at Bradford.watson@montana.edu Assistant Professor Jaya Mukhopadhyay at jaya.mukhopadhyay@ montana.edu Professor Steve Juroszek at stevej@montana.edu Professor Maier O’Neill Conrad at maireo@montana.edu Assistant Professor Brian Brush at brian.brush@montana.edu
